🏯 Tofuku-ji Temple|A Prestigious Zen Temple and Autumn Foliage Spot in Kyoto

Founded in 1236 by Regent Kujō Michie, Tofuku-ji is the head temple of the Rinzai sect’s Tofuku-ji school of Zen Buddhism. Its name combines characters from two great Nara temples—Tōdai-ji and Kōfuku-ji—reflecting its ambition to become a center of Buddhist practice.

Ranked fourth among the Five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto (Kyoto Gozan), Tofuku-ji holds a distinguished place in the history of Japanese Zen.

Within its vast grounds are many notable sites, including the Sanmon Gate, a designated National Treasure, and the Tsūtenkyō Bridge, famed for its breathtaking views of autumn leaves. Each fall, over 2,000 maple trees turn brilliant shades of red, drawing thousands of visitors from across Japan and abroad.

🪷 Tentoku-in Temple|A Serene Sub-Temple Known for Moss Gardens and Bellflowers

Tentoku-in is one of the sub-temples (tatchū) of Tofuku-ji, founded in 1346 by Zen Master Muumu Ikkei, the 30th abbot of Tofuku-ji. It is renowned for its dry landscape garden designed during the Momoyama period, where lush sugi-goke moss blankets the grounds and around 300 bellflowers (kikyo) bloom beautifully in early summer—giving the temple the nickname “Temple of Bellflowers.”

Though typically closed to the public, Tentoku-in offers limited public access twice a year during its seasonal special openings: one in early summer for viewing the blooming bellflowers, and another in autumn for admiring the colorful maple leaves. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful moment of reflection while taking in the quiet elegance of the changing seasons in this contemplative Zen space.
